Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised to open all stores in Canada by 1:00 a.m. on Friday and all of them by midnight on Saturday, according to a release from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The opening hours for stores in British Columbia, Quebec and Ontario will not be affected, the release said.
Prime Minister Trudeau’s announcement comes on the same day Walmart said it will open stores in all provinces and territories starting Friday at 1 a.s.m., the same as it did in 2015.
The move comes amid heightened concern over the spread of the coronavirus, which has caused millions of Canadians to lose access to essential goods.
The move is part of the government’s effort to reduce the spread and the costs of the pandemic.
Walmart Canada says it expects to employ about 300,000 people by the end of 2020.
The company said it plans to spend $1 billion on emergency response efforts, as well as $1.6 billion to expand and improve its supply chain, as the coronivirus spreads.
